The first public consultation on the operationalization of the Naga City Pet Cemetery was successfully held at the Sangguniang Panlungsod Session Hall on Friday, March 8, 2025, gathering concerned pet owners, advocates, and city officials.
The public consultation, led by City Administrator Joselito del Rosario, focused on key aspects of the cemetery’s implementation. del Rosario, who authored City Ordinance No. 2022-042 or the Pet Park and Cemetery Ordinance of Naga City alongside former Councilor Mila Raquid-Arroyo, emphasized the importance of providing a dignified resting place for pets. Representatives from the City Veterinary Office and the City Engineer’s Office were also present to provide more insights.
During the meeting, del Rosario discussed the cemetery’s proposed location and Engineer Francis Lenard Japson presented its concept design. The cemetery, which will cover 636.50 square meters, is expected to accommodate approximately 400 pets.
Dr. Johann Michael Sales, a veterinarian from the City Veterinary Office, highlighted the importance of a pet cemetery and public safety as primary concerns.
“This is very important (pet cemetery) because there are only few lands available for pet burials since Naga is a developing City. Improper disposal of animal cadavers could pose health risks, so we need a proper burial site for our pets to also ensure public safety.” Dr. Sales explained.
The consultation concluded with a unanimous decision to move forward with the project. del Rosario expressed hope for further meetings to refine operational guidelines based on recommendations.
The Naga City government, under the leadership of Mayor Nelson Legacion, remains committed to this initiative, recognizing pets as integral members of the community.
