As part of National Women’s Month, Mayor Nelson Legacion, Vice Mayor Cecilia De Asis, and Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Women chairperson Gayle Abonal-Gomez led the opening program and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Trade Fair at the City Hall grounds yesterday morning, March 3, 2025.
In her message, Gomez highlighted the importance of empowering women and ensuring equal opportunities in the workforce.
“We must not stop. We have to continue making policies to protect women’s rights, to continuously provide services as support, especially in health and education. We should create fair opportunities in work and in business.” She said.
In an interview with De Asis, she emphasized the long-standing tradition of supporting women-led businesses during Women’s Month.
“This trade fair has always been part of our Women’s Month celebration. It started as a program for women entrepreneurs, but due to COVID-19, many of them were forced to stop their businesses. Now, we are opening it to all small businesses to give them a platform to be recognized and to have a venue to showcase their products.” She shared.
“One of the biggest challenges women face is the lack of livelihood opportunities, so the government must find ways to help them establish their own sources of income.” She added.
For long-time trade fair participant Wilma San Esteban, the event serves as an opportunity to showcase her talents and reach a wider market.
“I have joined the trade fair every year since it started because I have many talents, and I want to make use of them. This event allows me to introduce my products beyond Naga. Everything I sell here is made by me, and if customers like them, they might come back for more.” Esteban said.
Currently, 11 women small business owners have joined the trade fair this opening to showcase their talent, creativity in food, beverages, and arts and crafts to the public.
The event will run until Friday, March 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the City Hall grounds.
