The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has officially resumed its train service between Naga and Legazpi on Wednesday, February 26, after a period of suspension.
The operation was stopped in October 2024 due to damage from Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, which destroyed train facilities and rail tracks. The railway operator has completed repairs, allowing the resumption of service this month.
PNR General Manager Deovanni S. Miranda confirmed via press release that, at the moment, only two trips will be available along this route due to ongoing repairs on another trainset. However, these repairs are expected to strengthen future services between Albay and Camarines Sur. He also assured passengers that more trips will be added in the coming months to meet the growing demand for faster, safer, and more affordable public transport.
In an interview, Nanay Maria Elsa Alarcon, 65, a senior citizen, expressed her gratitude for the return of the train service. “I’m thankful that the train ride is back, it’s a big help for me because the fare is cheap, it’s really a big help, especially to those who are less fortunate, and it’s faster because there’s no traffic. And since I’m old, this is easier for me. I hope it continues and that there won’t be any more interruptions in the service,” she added.
Vince Ervin Sta. Cruz, a student from Ateneo De Naga University, shared how the resumption of the train service benefits him. “I can save more money now. When the service was temporarily suspended due to Typhoon Kristine, the fares for buses and vans were more expensive compared to the train. Now that the train is available again, I save more, and it’s also faster than the bus or van, since travel time can vary depending on traffic,” he said.
The train will make stops at Legazpi, Daraga, Travesia, Ligao, Polangui, Iriga, Pili, and Naga stations. In addition to these regular stops, passengers can also board or alight at flag stops located at Kapantawan, Washington Drive, Bagtang, Oas, Matacon, Bato, Lourdes (Old), and Baao.
With the train service back in operation, the PNR aims to continue contributing to the growing demand for reliable and efficient public transportation in Bicol.
