Legacion urges truth, accountability from candidates

Mayor Son Legacion on his regular Monday interviews with the media

ATTY. Nelson Legacion, the incumbent city mayor and the national administration’s candidate for congressman in Camarines Sur’s 3rd district in the May 2025 elections, has called on the public to approach information with discernment, particularly those circulating on social media and broadcast media.

“Let’s be analytical first before we come up with our own decision that should be based on truth and what is really happening,” Legacion emphasized in a recent interview with local media.

He encouraged voters to focus on candidates’ platforms and plans rather than engaging in divisive discourse. “How about asking every candidate—including me—who is running for congressional post, as well as those running for gubernatorial, mayoral, vice mayoral, and council positions, about their own respective to-do plans to alleviate the plight of the ordinary, especially the indigent people? Let us focus our discourse on these important matters and not on intrigues or backstabbing,” he said.

Comparing candidates to job applicants, Legacion said they must present clear, actionable plans to the electorate, who serve as their potential employers. “In courtship, we, the candidates, have to tell the girl we are courting of the things we planned for the two of us, and not about unfounded things that will destroy the rivals,” he added.

Without naming specific individuals, Legacion revealed that he has filed cases against individuals who posted defamatory content and accusations on Facebook. The cases, now pending at the City Prosecution Office, include three counts of cyber libel and intriguing against honor, the latter being easier to prove in court, he said.

Legacion warned that even those who comment defamatory content on such posts could face legal action. “Authorities have their own way of identifying persons behind fake accounts or troll pages, which will make the filing of cases possible and not too difficult,” he said.

His legal team has identified several troll pages, including one revealed by a reputable news outfit as Bicol News, as well as accounts such as Naga Smells to the World and Ngana Na.

The mayor’s remarks underscore his commitment to promoting accountability and urging voters to demand transparency and truth from those seeking public office.
