RESOLUTION URGING LOCAL MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA PROFESSIONALS TO ADHERE TO AND PROMOTE RESPONSIBLE AND SENSITIVE REPORTING OF SUICIDE CASES
AND OTHER MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS

This resolution urges local media and social media professionals in Naga City and Camarines Sur to adhere to and promote responsible and sensitive reporting of suicide cases and other mental health concerns. It highlights the rising mental health issues and the significant influence of media on public attitudes. The resolution aims to prevent suicide contagion (Werther Effect) and promote help-seeking behaviors (Papageno Effect) by discouraging sensationalized or explicit reporting. It encourages media outlets to:

  • Avoid details on suicide methods or locations.
  • Refrain from glamorizing suicide or presenting it as a solution.
  • Include mental health resources and helpline numbers.
  • Focus on recovery and resilience stories.
  • Protect privacy and dignity of individuals and families.
  • Collaborate with mental health organizations. The resolution emphasizes upholding ethical journalism standards and aligning with national and international guidelines from organizations like the WHO and DOH.
