NAGA CITY is renewing its commitment to youth sports development, sending 147 delegates to the 2025 Philippine Youth Games-Batang Pinoy in General Santos City, scheduled from October 25 to 31. This initiative is a core part of the city’s grassroots sports investment, according to Sports Consultant Francis Barja.
The Batang Pinoy program, established by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), is crucial for the development of youth sports, according to Barja. He noted that the age bracket for participants has been adjusted to 13-17 years old.
Barja also emphasized that the program serves as a critical platform for talent identification. He cited the success of local swimmer Albert Jose Amaro II, who broke a Batang Pinoy record and went on to become a National Player, underscoring the program’s value as a foundation for national sports. “This is where it should start,” he asserted.
The sports consultant stressed that the program is integral to the national government’s advocacy for all local government units (LGUs) to support the continuum of sports development. Barja extended deep gratitude to Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo for providing full support, including supplying the delegates with quality uniforms.
“Regardless of whether you win or not, you have our 100% support… Just enjoy, be safe, because you representing the city is already a great source of pride for us,” Mayor Robredo said during the send-off on Saturday, October 18.
The Naga City delegation will be competing in 14 sporting events, including archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, chess, futsal, gymnastics, karatedo, sepak takraw, pencak silat, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and tennis. This diverse participation highlights the city’s push to foster various athletic talents through the PSC’s national grassroots initiative. | via Maida Boragay
